Our Mission

Our Mission and Responsibility

Recognizing that adults with developmental disabilities and or mental illness are people, first, who deserve the same rights and considerations in life as those without disabilities, Becoming Home, Inc. strives to empower adults with developmental disabilities and/or mental illness and improve their quality of life by expanding access to recreational opportunities, quality living conditions, and other resources that are otherwise limited or restricted.
Individuals with developmental disabilities and/or mental illness who receive Medicaid waiver services rely primarily on a small government benefit (Supplemental Security Income) to support their continual living expenses and sustain all other needs. This small allowance is often only slightly enough to cover basic living expenses with little to no funds left over for recreational engagements or access to other important resources, restricting the individuals’ lives in many domains. Consequences of limited funding include substandard living conditions, restricted choice-making opportunities, and restricted opportunities for community engagement. There is an immense need for resources that venture beyond meeting the most basic needs of this population and allow individuals to obtain a higher quality of life. These resources can promote physical, behavioral, psychological, social, and emotional well-being.
The presence of a developmental disability or mental illness does not nullify the need for fulfilling life experiences. The people we serve share many of the same needs, wishes, and desires for their lives as the larger population. For this reason, Becoming Home, Inc. has set out to meet the following goals to uphold our mission statement:
•    Increase meaningful community integration and reduce social isolation for adults with developmental disabilities and/or mental illness by funding community activities and events that, without additional supports, they might not be able to afford.
•    Combat substandard living conditions that this population is often subjected to due to limited funding and limited options for affordable housing by funding improvements to residential settings that will improve the quality of the living environment.
•    Expand access to technology that supports learning, reduces social isolation, enhances creativity, and allows access to entertainment that is otherwise restricted due to financial hardship.
•    Promote individual well-being by funding items or engagement in activities that improve self-esteem.
•    Supplementing any other activities, events, or other resources that are available to the larger population but restricted or limited in the population of adults with developmental disabilities and/or mental illness due to financial hardship, stigma, or other identifiable barriers that are directly related to the disability/disabilities.
•    Improving the standard of care for adults with developmental disabilities and/or mental illness by providing quality training and educational resources to organizations and institutions that support this population.

We feel that it is our responsibility to accomplish these goals to improve the overall quality of life of a well-deserving population. We plan to do this through fundraising events, grant requests, acquiring donations, sponsorships, and other fundraising efforts. Thank you for your consideration in supporting the goals of Becoming Home, Inc. With your help, we will accomplish our larger mission, one person at a time. Let us work together to make excellent care and exceptional quality of life the standard for the population of adults with developmental disabilities and/or mental illness. They deserve it.
